Healthcare fraud penalties recovered in 2015
Governmental agencies targeting abuse of federal healthcare programs have developed increasingly sophisticated tools and techniques to uncover questionable arrangements hidden within the complex design of these programs.
A March 2015 press release from the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) reminds us that best practices in healthcare extend beyond patient outcomes—that physicians, hospitals, and their allied partners are incumbent to be good stewards of the business side of healthcare as well.
In the press release, the Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services announced that $3.3 billion in fraud was recovered in 2014—a return of $7.70 for every dollar spent on investigations. Given this significant return, we can expect investigators to increase their activity and widen their nets.
